Wabash Crew - Past and Present
Wabash Crew was founded about ten years ago by a group of Wabash students interested in the sport of rowing and having a good time out on the water. Eventually, with the assistance of the Indianapolis Rowing Center, Wabash Crew hired Greg Wilson out of Indianapolis to serve as the coach. Greg got started in rowing while in graduate school at Indiana University. He was very insturmental in producing the group of experienced rowers that make up Wabash Crew today, although he is no longer actively coaching. Wes Zirkle, a crew alumni and student at IU Law School, has been helping out when he can. Wabash Crew has tried to maintain a presence at popular midwest regattas. In Fall '00 we participated in two regattas:
We will run sprint races of 2000 meters (1.25 miles) (as opposed to the 4500 and 5000 meter races of the fall) in the spring time, hopefully winning a berth to the Midwest Nationals in Madison, WI.
Who we are
The Wabash Crew is made up of dedicated Wabash men who, while in the pursuit of academic sucess, enjoy the sport of rowing competitively. We welcome any Wabash student who is interested in rowing. Prior rowing experience is not necessary!
Where we row
We row in the Eagle Creek Reservoir in Indianapolis and are based out of the Indianapolis Rowing Center. This is a superb modern facility for rowing. The reservoir is banned to all high horsepower motorboats and we generally have wide open courses available for our use. This course is currently the only internationally certified course in the country. It is the site of numerous regattas including the USRowing national championships every summer. The 1994 World Rowing Championships were also held at Eagle Creek.
Our practice times
The crew practices approximately four times a week with an occasional Saturday practice. Every Monday through Thursday we meet at 4:00p.m. in front of the Sparks Center and depart together for Eagle Creek using a school sponsored van. Each day we row for about an hour and are back on campus by 7:00p.m. Once we have set boats, an individual boat can set their own practice. Usually, morning practices (5:00 - 8:30a.m.) are preferred when they can fit class schedules because there are fewer weather problems. In the fall 2000 season we moved almost exclusively to morning practice after the first week and it worked very well. This practice time is subject to change, so please check with an officer before coming to a practice. Currently we are in the off season, which will continue until the combined water and air temperature reached 100 degrees again in the spring.
