York is a bustling city of 175,000 people, including 20,000 university
students who study at the University of York as well as York St.
John University. The economy is built on chocolate factories,
construction, engineering products and scientific instruments,
the insurance and health care industries, and transportation services,
particularly the railway. Tourism is a major component of the local
employment as almost four million people visit the city every year.
York is located in the heart of North Yorkshire, where the Ouse and
Foss rivers meet. From York, London and Edinburgh are only a few hours’ train
ride away. Seaside resort towns and two national parks, the Yorkshire
Dales and North York Moors, are accessible by public transportation,
and within the city a theater, opera house, cinemas, museums and historical
sites, pubs, restaurants, and shopping all offer plenty of options
for leisure.
Rail and bus links provide easy access to the rest of the UK, Ireland,
and Europe.
